What is wilson silverleaf? We're organitarians; it's best for our bodies and the planet. We cloth diapered Nina for the same reason. We drive a hybrid car & wish we could afford solar panels on our house. I'm a strong advocate for homebirth, full-time mom, & also a movie junkie. We don't have a tv though; we watch dvds on our computer. We love contradancing. I garden & knit; Larry's a puzzle lover & plays fantasy football.

Giving up soy milk

I've just been reading in Utne about some of the unhealthy consequences of soy. It also says that soy is ubiquitous in our food and one of the nutritionist suggests giving up soy milk. I'm thinking of doing that but I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. I only use soy milk for my cereal in the morning and so I'll need to have something to replace it.
Right now Nina and I have either cereal (she eats hers with yogurt) or oatmeal for breakfast. I'd like to continue to have two options to avoid complete boredom. I'd also like them to be somewhat healthy and somewhat cheap. I'll also need to be able to eat enough to not need to snack continuously at work, so please don't suggest a grapefruit.
We got the soy milk maker as a gift for a wedding shower so I know I've been making soy milk for five and a half years now. It won't be easy to give up so please help me come up with a good alternative. Thanks.

larrrrrrr-eeeee!!! what about almond milk? or any other nut! don't know if your milk maker makes it...but it's pretty good. also you can make milk out of oats. soy milk is really not good for you. not only is it soy, but also the process that it goes through to make milk from a bean is pretty toxic...for your body and the environment. i like apple juice on my cereal.

I adore goat milk.

Also unpasturised milk is about a zillion times nicer than the pasturised stuff.

But maybe you're vegan...

My daughter is allergic to dairy. When I started doing research on a good dairy alternative, I was surprised to find out that soy milk contained toxins, too! We decided on Rice Milk. Trader Joe's has a large variety (regular, vanilla, different brands). My daughter loves it, and now the whole family uses it.

You can also make your own nut milk. Well, and probably your own rice milk, too. I know horchata is traditionally homemade, so it goes to follow that if you leave out the cinnamon...

Oh my, I think I really need some horchata now...

I love coconut milk, super creamy. It's the only canned thing I buy, I know its not local but its damn good and organic, also it has anti-fungal properties. It may help the thyroid, too, I know coconut oil really helps me.
BTW, if you have a moment, I would love your advice on finding good priced organic yarn for a baby blanket, I'm thinking cotton? THankyou! amandasunshowers@hotmail.com

nut butter on sprouted grain toast is our mainstay. We switch between pb, almond, and cashew/macadamia. They're all pretty cheap when you consider that we use a couple of tablespoons a day, but pb is by far the cheapest.

mmmmm . . . getting hungry
